Monument record 5338/1 - Possible Iron Age/Roman settlement, north-west of Twelve Oaks
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Possible Iron Age and/or Roman enclosures, probably indicating a settlement site, are recorded as cropmarks on EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken in July 2011. The site has three main components aligned north-west to south-east. A partially visible rectilinear enclosure, with curved corners and a possible convex south east facing side, extends over an area measuring about 80 metres by 50 metres. A curvilinear enclosure is attached to the south-east end of its south-west facing side, and encloses a semi-circular area about 30 metres across. On the same alignment as the rectilinear enclosure, there is rectangular enclosure, measuring about 50 metres by 25 metres. Cropmarks across the modern field and to the south east suggest that the site was once overlain by Medieval and/or Post Medieval ridge and furrow

{1} Possible Iron Age and/or Roman enclosures, probably indicating a settlement site, are recorded as cropmarks on EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken in July 2011. The site has three main components aligned north-west to south-east. A partially visible rectilinear enclosure, with curved corners and a possible convex south east facing side, extends over an area measuring about 80 metres by 50 metres. On the same alignment as the rectilinear enclosure, there is rectangular enclosure, measuring about 50 metres by 25 metres.
The visible extents of the site cover an area measuring about 180 metres by 100 metres.
Cropmarks across the modern field and to the south east suggest that the site was once overlain by Medieval and/or Post Medieval ridge and furrow.
{2} The enclosures are as described above (Source 1) and were mapped as part of the Bedford Borough NMP project from aerial photographs.
