Full Description

{1} Small-scale excavation at the Orchard in 1984-6 identified evidence of early Saxon settlement which was abandoned by the middle Saxon period. It was not resettled until the later 9th-10th centuries when a series of rectilinear enclosures were laid out. They ultimately became a row of peasant tenements called Rotton Row. Settlement here appears to have been abandoned in the medieval period, althou it is possible they were relocated closer to the Rotton Row street frontage.
