Full Description

{1} Trial trench excavation identified part of a probable Iron Age/Roman settlement located between two railway cuttings. It is likely that many of the settlement remains were truncated during the construction of the railways, although cropmarks to the west may be a continuation. Two ditches aligned east to west may define the northern limit of the settlement. To the south were a number of pits, which may have been used for sand extraction or as rubbish pits. In one of the pits an inhumation was partially exposed, but not excavated any further. Both middle Iron Age and Roman pottery was recovered from the pits. A series of postholes and aassociated gully may have formed a structure.
