Full Description

{1} The Victorian diarist Joseph Gutteridge stated that 'At the lower end of these meadows the railway to Bedford crosses by a series of arches, and from the excavations here have been exhumed an immense quantity of human remains, together with those of horses and cattle and rude weapons of war, showing that a terrible conflict had taken place in the far distant past. It is quite a common saying that these arches were built on a foundation of dead men’s bones.'
