Summary

A 19th-century farmstead of regular courtyard plan. The farmhouse and some of the barns have been demolished and only two ranges of 19th-century stone-built barns survive. One appears to have been a threshing and hay barn, whilst the other appears to have had a multifunction purpose.

Full Description

{1} A level II building recording survey was undertaken of two ranges of stone-built barns prior to conversion to residential and office use in 2019.
Both ranges are present on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1885 as part of a larger farmstead and the 1851 census lists the Slater family living at the 'Lodge', indicating that the farm had been built by this date. In 1885, the farm complex consisted of multiple buildings arranged in a full regular courtyard plan which is a plan type generally associated with holdings over 150 acres. The yard was enclosed on all sides by three separate blocks of buildings in addition to the farmhouse to the south-east. Significant modification was undertaken over the course of the 20th century including the loss of some of the barns and the farmhouse. The two surviving ranges of barns are constructed largely from limestone. The roof coverings had been replaced with asbestos during the 20th century. The northern range includes two buildings with large opposing doors, at least one was probably used as a threshing barn the other possibly for hay storage. The southern, multi-purpose barn, had cow housing and storage on the ground floor which opened directly onto the yard, with crop storage on an upper storey.
