Summary

Mill recorded at Domesday in 1086. When the Grand Junction Canal was built in 1797 the water was diverted from the mill to the canal and milling ceased.

Full Description

{1} 1086 Domesday survey recorded Brandestone with one mill rendering 2s
c1540 After the Dissolution, the Earl of Rutland bought back the manors of Lilleshall and Newstead (both having belonged to religious houses) including the watermill
1543 John Smith of Braunston fined for building a horse-mill, which competed with the Lord's mill.
1777 Enclosure Award mentions Water Corn Mill and the Inclosure called the Mill Orchard
1793 Site operating as Braunston Mill
1797 When the Grand Junction Canal was built the water was diverted from the mill into the canal and milling ceased.

The site is on the north side of the canal at the top lock of the Braunstone flight.
