Summary

Whiston Mill is documented from the 17th century and was milling until at least the late 19th century. It was demolished by 1919, although it is not shown on late 19th-century OS maps.

Full Description

{1} 1086 Domesday survey Wicestone with one mill rendering 20s.
1680 Thomas Coles, miller of Whiston.
1796 Notice from Thomas Coles, Whiston Mills, that he has established a flour warehouse in Northampton.
1823 Whiston Mill carrying three pairs of stones, stone and slate with a house adjoining was insured for £300 with a further £100 for standing machinery and implements in the mill.
1864 Whiston Mill advertised to let, after bankruptcy of previous miller, F Longland.
1878 Whiston Mills advertised for sale with three pairs of French stones and a 9ft diameter pit wheel.
1919 By this time the mill had been demolished.

Inspection in April 2002. No upstanding buildings although the site has not been levelled. The numerous humps in the ground may be due to masonry but his is hidden by extensive undergrowth. There is a low brick arch over a narrow watercourse but the relationship of this with the working of the mill has not been identified.
