Full Description
{1} The Handley Page Hampden 1 was attached to 16 Operational Training Unit, RAF Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire. A cross country training flight was detailed on Wednesday 25th March 1942. At 00.45hrs on Thursday 26th, the aircraft flew into the ground at great speed and the four Canadian pupils were killed. The men are all buried at Old Weston.
Metal detecting survey was undertaken in March 2012 to locate and define the remains of the aircraft crash site. Following the successful identification of the crash site, archaeological excavation of the remains was undertaken 15th-16th September 2012 under licence from the Ministry of Defence. Three trenches were dug using a mechanical excavator and much of the surviving remains of the aircraft were removed. The remains are held at the Twinwood Aviation Museum.
