Full Description

{1} No. 1 Adams Road, Woodford Halse, is part of a post-war social housing development erected between 1945 and 1955. It is a prefabricated Duo-slab Airey house of pitched roof type, designed by William Airey with components manufactured at nine different factories at the peak of production, and of a type erected by local authorities across the country to meet housing demands during post-war shortages of bricks and bricklayers. Although the manufactured concrete slabs were durable and designed to be permanent, dry construction methods meant that the houses were draughty and inefficient. A number of local authorities currently have outstanding programmes to demolish and rebuild or refurbish this type of housing stock. During the decade of production, 25,991 Duo-slab Airey houses were built, 20,000 of which were of the pitched roof type. No. 1 Adams Road was designed as a family dwelling and is of two bays and two storeys, reflecting the functional utilitarian design of the post-war period.

No. 1 Adams Road, Woodford Halse, is a prefabricated semi-detached house of standard and functional design reflecting post-war utility, and does not meet the criteria for listing in a national context.
