Monument record 8922/1 - Probable Iron Age/Roman settlement, west of North Lodge

Please read our .

Summary

Iron Age and/or Roman ditched enclosures and boundaries are recorded as cropmarks on EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken in July 2011 and on Google Earth aerial photographs taken in the 2004 and 2006. They probably indicate settlement and associated land division. They extend over a roughly triangular shaped area measuring about 200 metres by 390 metres. This area is defined to the north and south by broad ditched boundaries 2-4 metres wide, with another ditch possibly forming a track along the south side of the northern boundary. The interior of the triangular shaped area is divided into a series of smaller enclosures, most appended to the southern boundary, with some attached to the exterior of the east end of the southern boundary. The enclosures are of varying shapes and sizes and measue from about 10 metres to 50 metres across. Some were were mapped during the Northamptonshire NMP project. However the enclosures and boundaries described in this record add significant new detail to the features already mapped. Cropmarks across the site indicate that it was once covered by Medieval and/or Post Medieval ridge and furrow.
