Monument record 6801/2 - Probable Iron Age/Roman settlement, west of Denford Ash Farm
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Iron Age and/or Roman ditched enclosures and boundaries are recorded as cropmarks on EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken in July 2011 and on Google Earth aerial photographs taken in the 2006 and 2010. They probably indicate settlement and associated land division. There are two areas of conjoined enclosures at either end of modern field and extending into the next field to the south. These enclosures vary in size and shape but most are rectilinear and measure from 25 metres to 10 metres across. The two areas of enclosures are linked by a long ditched boundary, about 420 metres in length, along which there are enclosures attached at intervals. The cropmarks extend over an area measuring 550 metres north to south and 240 metres east to west.

Full Description
{1-3} Iron Age and/or Roman ditched enclosures and boundaries are recorded as cropmarks on EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken in July 2011 and on Google Earth aerial photographs taken in the 2006 and 2010. The cropmarks extend over an area measuring 550 metres north to south and 240 metres east to west centred at TL 0099 7634.
Part of the southern end of the complex was mapped during the Northamptonshire NMP project (HER Number 6801/1). However the enclosures and boundaries described in this record add significant new detail to the features already mapped. Cropmarks across the site indicate that it was once covered by Medieval and/or Post Medieval ridge and furrow.
