Full Description

{1} c.1875 boot and shoe factory. 3-storey, 5-bay boot and shoe factory, fronting Louise Road to the north. It post-dates the adjacent terraced house to the east, the stack of which was raised when the factory was built. To the west it is block-bonded into the rear range of 56 Lorne Road, which it also post-dates. Successive editions of the OS show a single range with a yard to the rear. In the north front flush bands of buff brick link the segmental heads of the openings (now painted but probably also buff). The windows have stone sills and there is an eaves course of moulded bricks. There is a a painted sign band between the ground and first floors, but no lettering is now visible. The original entrance is in the the westernost bay, beneath a seond-floor taking-in doorway which retains its jib crane. The windows of the north front retain the original cast-iron frames with a top-hung opening section, and large quantities of opaque glass. A three-flue stack on the east gable suggests a single fireplace on each floor. In the recent domestic conversion two ground lfoor windows were replaced by a double garage entrance.
