Full Description

{1} Trial trench excavation identified several small pits in one of the trenches. Fairly large quantities of slag and other metalworking residues indicative of Roman iron smelting were recovered from the pit fills. One of the pits contained early Anglo-Saxon pottery. In an adjacent trench part of a large shallow pit containing early Anglo-Saxon pottery was identified. It is probably a sunken-featured building. Other features in this trench included a ditch and a posthole.

Given the proximity, it is possible that the metal working could relate to Saxon activity however, based on the technologies evident in the fragments of slag and kiln that a Roman or Late Iron Age date is more probable.
