Monument record 8967/1 - Late Bronze Age to late Iron Age settlement, west of Humphries Drive

Archaeological investigation identified a discrete area of settlement on land to the west of Brackley comprising curvilinear ditches and discrete pits and postholes. Pottery dating from the late Bronze Age through to the late Iron Age was associated with the features. Further scattered ditches may be remnants of associated field systems.

{1} Geophysical survey identified a group of anomalies interpreted as a settlement in the centre of the survey area which occupies a relative high point in the surrounding landscape. The settlement comprised a complex of small enclosures and pits.

{2} Archaeological trial trench evalaution confirmed the results of the geophysical survey, identifying an area of late Bronze Age to late Iron Age settlement, largely comprising curvilinear ditches and gullies and frequent pits and postholes. A small assemblage of pottery and animal bone was recovered. Possible later Romano-British activity may also have been identified. A socketed iron object, though of uncertain identity, may be of this date.
