Summary
Medieval pottery kilns indicated in the northern area of Northampton. The sites are indicated by documentary references including the placenames Potters Field and Potters Hill. Potters Hill is thought to be situated within the vicinity of the Market Square and may indicate the selling of pottery rather than manufacture. Documentry references date from the 16th century.

Full Description
{1} The Northampton 1504 Rental refers to the 'Row opposite the Bakers Row now called Potters Hill' in which are recorded seven shops and one tenement. This wording implies that it was only recently named as such. The descent of a property on the west side of the Market Square can be traced from the late 15th century to the 18th century is recorded as the 'Oterowe' but also mentions Potters Hill.
