Full Description
{1} Draft lease for ore extraction was presented from 21.06.1852 & extraction was commenced on 1st.December 1859; first owner was John Hickman but he ran into difficulties with transport of ore from site; extraction was commenced by Blisworth Iron Stone Mining Co.Ltd. But they ran into same difficulties; although railway did exist at Blisworth they were unable to persuade LNWR to allow them to have sidings at local station; company taken over by G.E.Bevan & Co.Ltd. In 1861 & ore was taken by them to canal by a 3ft.7in. Gauge tramway pulled by horses; this company was taken over by executors of Pickering Phipps in 1903; it is likely that canal barges used plied directly from Blisworth to Hunsbury Furnaces; workings ceased in line with furnaces on 1st January 1921.
