Monument record 5764/2 - Prehistoric and Roman settlement, east of Watling Street

Archaeological investigation has identified a rectangular enclosure with possible internal sub-divisions as well as evidence of peripheral activity.

{2} Geophysical survey identified a rectangular enclosure measuring c 50m by c 60m, already partially known from cropmark evidence. The enclosure appears to have entrances at either end and internal features such as internal divisions and pits were also detected.

{3} Trial trench excavation identified the southern and western ditches of the enclosure. Late Iron Age/Roman pottery was recovered from one of the ditch sections. Two pits and a layer were identified in a trench to the east. One of the pit fills contained Roman pottery, hammerscale and possibly fragments of a hearth associated with iron smithing.
