Full Description

{1} An apparently isolated smelting-furnace on high ground overlooking the river valley had been constructed in a pit, 0.75m deep into the bedrock. The furnace had been relined on a number of occasions. The furnace pit contained in situ the remains of at least three earlier linings all semicircular in plan. The only dating evidence consisted of a few fragments of late Iron Age coarse ware. A specimen of heavy slag from this furnace showed the 'iron' to be well reduced; it is typical of Iron Age/Romano-British material with low silica material.
