Full Description
{1} Oakley (SP 867866) Seen in a 2 ft deep trench a band of sand and beach pebbles, 2 to 6 in thick and about 12 ft wide. The N end started 10 in below the present surface, continued for 4 ft then curved downwards to disappear below the trench bottom, Above the curved portion was a consolidated layer of black /grey clay, foreign to local geology. No ditches were seen. This evidence lay on the line
of a possible Roman road between the Gartree Road at about SP 860894 and Irchester Roman town (SP 920668).
