Full Description
{1} The owners from 1858 were The Cogenhoe Iron Ore Company, and from 1877 the Executors of Edward Saunders. From 1880 it was The Cogenhoe Iron Ore Company again, and from 1886 F.Cohen until closure in 1888.
Whellan refers to a “prosperous Cogenhoe iron ore industry”, and it was quite a big business for its day; in addition to the ironstone quarrying a considerable amount of clay was also dug, a brickworks being erected close to the LNWR junction. The slump of the 1880s however proved too much and business closed on 16th July 1888. As well as auctioning the rolling stock the track was lifted and the brickworks were razed to the ground.
{2} The mines were short-lived, the bulk of the stone being got was opencast.
{3} The mines are about to be opened out.
{4} New fields just opened at Cogenhoe.
