Monument record 8393/1 - C20th Ironstone Workings (Pitsford Ironstone Co.)

{1} Owners from 1919 Pitsford Ironstone Co. from 7th March 1961 Staverley Minerals Ltd. From September 1962 Byfield Ironstone Co. Ltd until closure on 27th August 1965. Operations on the site commenced in 1923 and the first record of production was in 1925. This was a period of slack demand but with such a large parcel of land to be worked there was no immediate need to rush. The land stretched almost to Pitsford village and southeast towards Moulton. Permission was granted for rail line to be put under the main A508 Northampton to Market Harborough road in July 1954 so that the land towards Moulton could be worked. Quarrying commenced in this area in March 1959. In 1963 the quarries were still very busy but in the middle sixties the slump in the iron ore industries brought rumours of closure in the spring of 1965. The last load being despatched on 27th August 1965.
