Full Description

{1} Archaeological trial trench evaluation identified Roman features, including two pits and four ditches, in two adjacent trenches. All the ditches were aligned north-west to south-east. The Roman pottery assemblage pointed to a broad 1st-3rd century AD date, although three sherds of late Iron Age/early Roman pottery may indicate an origin in the late Iron Age.

{2} Archaeological strip, map and sample excavation was carried out in the area of features identified during the preceding evaluation. Part of a rectangular enclosure dating to the 1st century AD was identified with evidence of internal sub-divisions as well as a number of pits and two limestone surfaces. Several episodes of maintenance were indicated by the recutting of the enclosure ditches, particularly those on the eastern side. The lack of material culture suggests that this activity represents and enclosure on the periphery of a settlement.
