Summary

Northampton Borough Gaol was rebuilt in 1845 on the Mounts, replacing an earlier gaol on Fish Lane. It was built by Hull on the Pentonville model. It closed in 1922 and was discontinued in 1928. It was sold in 1929. Also known as Northampton (Upper) Prison, Northampton Prison and HMP Northampton

Full Description

{4} Known as Her Majesty's Prison by 1885, formerly the Borough Gaol. Erected in 1845 and originally constructed to contain 94 male and 16 female prisoners. Constructed of brick, with white stone facings and costing £17,000. Mr William Hull the elder was the architect. In 1879 the prison was altered and the number of prisoners that could be accomodated increased to 181 male and 33 female prisoners. The former Water Works Reservoir was converted into an exercise ground.
