Summary

The town gaol was located on Fish Street by the late 18th or the beginning of the 19th century. It was subsequently altered in 1823 and 1840 and replaced in 1845 by the Borough Gaol on the Mounts. The building on Fish Street became a Police Station.

Full Description

{1} From the 16th century rooms beneath the town hall were used as a gaol but in 1777 were deemed unfit and around 1800 a gaol was built by the town on a site in Fish Lane given by the corporation, and subsequently altered in 1823 and 1840.

{2} 'Town Gaol' on east side of Fish Lane.

{3} In 1779 there a was a courtyard four feet wide with two rooms for felons, and one for debtors. In November 1779, there was one debtor and one deserter in this Borough Gaol, which was situated on Fish Lane, where the present Police Station now stands.

{4} Police Station located between The Riding and St Giles Street on east side of Fish Street.
