Full Description

{1} Archaeological trial trench excavation identified Romano-British features in two trenches along the north-eastern edge of the site. A pit or ditch terminus was found in trench 25 and contained 1st and 2nd century AD ceramics. In trench 14 there was the remains of a probable square/rectilinear enclosure or structure; possibly beam slots although no internal features were identified.

{2} A strip, map and sample excavation was undertaken over two areas where Romano-British remains were recovered during the previous trial trench excavation. The northern area contained a potential structure or small drainage system along with two pits and two undated postholes. The southern area contained two boundary ditches that seemed to form a sub-rectangular enclosure on a WNW-ESE alignment. The pottery assemblage was typical of a rural domestic settlement and indicated that the settlement originated in the late 1st/early 2nd century AD, with a suggestion that some features continued into the 3rd century AD. There was a single phase of settlement. A small quantity of CBM and fired clay suggest the presence of structures in the vicinity.
