Building record 600/5/22 - Stable Block, Canons Ashby House
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Former stable block and coach house located c50m south-east of the house. An inscribed kneeler bears the date of 1758, but it likely that this records a phase of remodelling rather than a construction date. The stables were remodelled by Sir Henry Dryden in 1858, renovated in 1981 and converted to visitor facilities by the National Trust in 2000.

Full Description
{1} Historic building recording of the former stable block. The origins of this building are obscure, although a survey of the estate in 1717 records a stable. The reset kneeler bearing the date of 1758 may then represent a phase of remodelling rather than construction. A single timber that may be part of a relic cruck-blade also points to earlier origins, possibly 16th century. Dryden's mid 19th-century survey indicates that the range was originally thatched, with the northern section tiled in 1843. The 1858 remodelling including extension and internal improvements. The whole range was tiled.
[2} A set of drawings of the stable by Sir Henry Dryden showing the alterations and renovations undertaken in 1858 (both 'before' and 'after').
