Full Description
{1} Owner c1909 Lamport Ironstone Co. (leases and wayleaves negotiations were carries out by the parent company Staverley Coal & Iron Co.Ltd.,) from c 1923 Staverley Coal & Iron Co. Ltd., from 23.09.1948 Staverley Iron & Chemical Co. Ltd., and from 07.03.1961 Staverley Minerals Ltd until closureon the 3rd April 1963. The name of Lamport relates to the estate of Lamport Hall as the first of the quarrying sites commenced to the west of the Northampton to Market Harborough road in the vicinity of Hanging Houghton from there to the east of the main road and either side of the Scaldwell road. The quarries were connected to the LNWR Northampton to Market Harborough line via an aerial ropeway. From Hanging Houghton the quarries were extended to the south of Scaldwell with the aerial ropeway being extended as well. The next extension was to the site south of the Holcot road and to the old Attenborough site at Brixworth (Spratton Quarries) although this old quarry does not appear to have been redeveloped. In there hayday these were very profitable quarries and lasted well into the 1960's before being closed.
