Full Description
{1} Archaeological excavation was undertaken prior to development. In Areas D and E a length of the major Roman road which linked Kettering and Great Casterton was found. In Area E, the flanking ditches and raised agger with limestone metalling survived. The road was over 17m wide in total, with a running surface between 5m and 5.35m wide. In Area D, the falnking roadside ditches survived but no agger or surface material. There was evidence of significant repairs and alterations to the road, including the construction of a large bank/bund. Six probable late Roman coins were found in the bank material.
A partial inhumation of a middle-aged burial respected the alignment of the road and a radiocarbon date of 43 BC- AD 126 @ 94% probability was returned. The grave was truncated by a Phase 3 roadside ditch.
