Full Description
{2} Archaeological observation was undertaken during the construction of a house at Aynho. No archaeological features were identified on the eastern side of the site, but the remains of an early-middle Saxon inhumation cemtery was identified on the western side. The remains of nine individuals, seven of which were articulated, were found. A small assemblage of early-middle Saxon pottery was found in the grave fills and three of the inhumations were associated with grave goods- a female burial contained a whittle tanged knife and possible cauldron hanger and two male burials also contained knives. An unstratified iron 'sword-type' object probably originated from a disturbed burial and may be a weaving batten. The cemetery likely extends further to the west but absence of archaeological features in two house plots to the east suggests that this is the eastern limit of activity. Two ditches were also identified; these may also be Saxon in date, although a prehistoric arrowhead was found in the fill of one.
