Monument record 4240/0/1 - Cropmarks of prehistoric ring ditches and enclosures, north of Whiston

Cropmarks of at least three ring ditches, one of which is a double ring ditch, visible on aerial photography. Adjacent is the cropmark of a large oval enclosure. Although much of the south-eastern portion of the enclosure is not visible, there is some evidence that the enclosure comprises a series of ditch segments rather than a continuous circuit.

The cropmarks do not appear to be visible on any other available aerial photograph.Two of the ring ditches are closely spaced; the northern example is a double ring ditch with a diameter of 43m. Some 23m to the south-east another, single ring ditch is 33m in diameter. To the east is a large oval enclosure, c100m north to south and c75m east to west. The south-eastern portion of the enclosure is not visible, but the visible parts appear to be composed of a series of segments rather than a continuous circuit. This enclosure may be a hengiform monument of late Neolithic/early Bronze Age date. To the north of the enclosure is a further ring ditch, c15m in diameter. The ring ditches are likely to be the remnants of Bronze Age round barrows.
