Monument record 8773/2 - Probable Iron Age settlement, north-east of Coales's Lodge
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Geophysical survey has identified a sinuous boundary ditch extending over 300m. A series of curvilinear enclosures are attached either side of it. A larger D-shaped enclosure is visible to the south. To the north is a series of rectilinear enclosures, possibly a field system. Archaeological evaluation in 2023 identified a network of features with evidence of multi-phase land use spanning from the Iron Age to the Roman period.

Full Description
{1} - Running from the north-east corner to the south-west is a single curvilinear anomaly, suggestive of a boundary ditch. Appending this ditch are several enclosures and further ditches. Along the north-eastern and central part of this linear anomaly are at least 9 enclosures, which are typically round or sub-circular in form and suggestive of Iron Age. To the south are larger, rectilinear enclosures. Many of these enclosures have discrete and linear anomalies within them. To the far south, there is a D-shaped enclosure.
{2} The site was considered for scheduling, but after examining all the records and other relevant information and having carefully considered the national importance of the site, it is considered that the criteria for scheduling are not fulfilled. This is a settlement of local and regional interest only and its interest should be managed locally.
{3} Trial trenching undertaken in Field 3 identified a concentration of archaeological activity. The works revealed a network of linear and curvilinear ditches, pits, many of which correlated with geophysical anomalies and formed parts of enclosure systems, boundary ditches, and trackways. Evidence indicates multi-phase land use, with enclosure and boundary features likely originating in the Iron Age and continuing into the Roman period. Overall, a mixed agricultural and settlement landscape with sustained activity from the Iron Age through the Roman period
