Summary

Former Sun Inn public house was purpose built in 1864. Is is of two storeys and is constructed of red brick, painted white, under a pitched, slate-covered roof with two ridge stacks. The front elevation has a centrally placed door with lintel and overlight, flanked by canted bay windows. All of the windows are 20th century replacements. The interior contains wall paintings by a local artist Kenneth Kimbell, which depict village life through the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The single storey rear wing, which may have been a dairy, is of coursed ironstone construction under a pitched, slate covered roof with a tall red-brick chimney. The rear elevation is partly constructed of coursed limestone and has adjoining outbuildings, forming a U-shaped plan. There is a separate outbuilding to the rear which may have been a former stable.

Full Description

{1} The former Sun Inn is a mid 19th century, two-storey brick building, painted white, under a pitched, slate-covered roof with two ridge stacks. The front (east) elevation has a centrally placed door with a lintel and overlight, flanked by canted bay windows, and a further, probably later, bay on the left hand side. The first floor has three windows with gauged brick arches, the central aperture being blind. All of the windows are 20th century replacements. The interior contains wall paintings by the local artist Kenneth Kimbell which depict village life through the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The single-storey rear wing, which may have been a dairy, is of coursed ironstone construction, under a pitched, slate-covered roof with a tall red-brick chimney. The rear (west) elevation is partly constructed of coursed limestone and has adjoining outbuildings, forming a U-shape plan. There is a separate outbuilding to the rear which is possibly a former stable.
