Monument record 8828/1 - Probable Iron Age/Roman settlement, Greatworth Fields

Geophysical survey, undertaken ahead of HS2, identified anomalies probably associated with later prehistoric and/or Roman settlement including rectilinear and irregular-shped enclosures, probable trackways and a ring ditch. Areas of enhanced magnetic response may indicate small-scale industrial activities being carried out on site.

{2} In 2024, Headland Archaeology undertook works on a stone-lined well. During this excavation, the circular well structure yieleded Roman pottery and the remains of a human skeleton. Situated on top of the basal fill, the roughly crouched skeleton of a young (18-25 years) adult male. The skeletal remains indicated that the deceased likely suffered from an infectious disease such as brucellosis or tuberculosis.
