Monument record 7105/0/2 - Undated ditches
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Sinuous and linear ditches of uncertain date and function are visible as levelled earthworks and cropmarks on historic aerial photographs. Located in fields north of West Wood, the ditches are up to 4.5 metres wide. A sinuous ditch extends about 490 metres: a far longer sinuous ditch, part of which appears to be double ditched, extends about 1238 metres. Four other shorter linear ditch sections are nearby. Some of these features are visible as levelled earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1947. These ditches are located in an area where there was a Second World War civil bombing C-series ‘QL’ decoy, replicating the railway marshalling yards at Wellingborough and these ditch features might have been part of that facility, though this is speculative. [Some of the linear features recorded separately under the Northamptonshire NMP project]
