Full Description

{1} Owners from 1873 Glendon Iron Co, from 1882 Butlin Bevan & Co. from 27th June 1889 Thomas Butlin & Co.Ltd., from 1891 Burton Ironstone Co. from cAugust 1896 Burton Ironstone Co. Ltd.,closure 4th February 1921. The actual opening of these quarries is in some doubt but early records show that quarrying was taking place alongside the Burton Latimer to Cranford road by Glendon & Co. in 1873. This system throughout it's history has been divided by the Cranford Road and the Kettering to Cranford Road. The quarries were connected to Midland Railway and at first three quarries were opened up. One to the north, one to the west and one to the south of this junction called "Black Ridge". The most successful being the one to the south as this continued to be quarried to an area well to the south of Burton Latimer itself. Two later quarries were later commenced to the west of the Cranford to Burton Latimer road and these were called Cuckoo and Jackdaw. Work continued well into the 20th century with the quarries to the east of Burton Latimer until the recession after the first world war and the quarries were eventually closed on 4th February 1921.
