Summary

Work began on HMP Wellingborough in 1961 and it was occupied as a closed borstal in 1963 or 1964. A long wing with in-cell sanitation was added in 1975. The prison closed briefly in 1990 to allow inmates from Grendon to move in while refurbishment took place. It reopened at the end of 1990 as an adult male Category C prison. Wellingborough is one of the earliest "New Wave" designs, a slightly modified version of HMP Blundeston. The main difference is in the use of three storied, rather than four storied wings. A large complex of workshops was built at the rear of the site. In the area between them and the main part of the prison, there was a plan to erect a new L-plan DOW IV (Directorate Of Works IV) wing. However, the prison was closed in 2012 and subsequently demolished. In late 2020, the construction of HMP Five Wells was completed.
