Monument record 9056/0/1 - Possible Iron Age settlement, Notamore Copse

Curvilinear enclosure possible prehistoric settlement in Notamore Copse, Wicken Wood, on the border between Wicken (Northamptonshire) and Leckhampstead (Buckinghamshire)

{1-3} A curvilinear enclosure of possible Iron Age date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of Historic England’s North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project. Located in Notamore Coppice, Wicken Wood, Wicken and centred at SP 73023 40461. This curvilinear enclosure has two straight sides of approximately 75m in length with the third side curving between them, it encloses a subcircular pond at the centre which is 25m across with further linear features visible outside this area, which may be associated with it or later. The parish and county boundaries cross the area and skirt the edge of the pond. The earthworks are visible on aerial photographs in cleared woodland both from the 1940s and on modern aerial photographs, although some of the outside features are not visible possibly because of modern land use, which is forestry. Lidar visualisations show the curvilinear enclosure and pond remain as earthworks. Iron Age pottery scatter is recorded nearby (MBC4100).
