Full Description

{1-3} Three extractive pits of post medieval/modern date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks, levelled earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of Historic England’s North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project. Located approximately 250m east of Sparrow Lodge, Wicken, and centred at SP 75317 38883. Westernmost pit is subcircular extractive pit approximately 110x90m in size, and is visible as levelled earthworks. This pit is not shown on historic mapping but other gravel pits 100m to the north east are on the Epoch 1 historic map. To the north east of this an elongated pit visible as earthworks approximately 175x40m in size and are marked on Epoch 1 historic map. The third is a subrectangular extractive pit approximately 60x35m in size, visible as a cropmark. These pits are cut into a deposit of Mid-Pleistocene glaciofluvial sand and gravel deposits overlying Blisworth Limestone
