Full Description
{1} "Nearly north of [SP 56 SE 18] on a slight elevation presumed to have been a tumulus, at the top of the inner vallum... part of the skeleton of a man, the tooth of a horse and several other bones were found near the surface [in 1823.] This presumed tumulus is probably the feature shown on Baker's plan (see AO:60:382:3 on SP 56 SE 6) at SP 5892 6312. This is apparently shown by the OS as an integral part of the bank but it is quite distinct on Baker's plan. Whether it is a tumulus or not, the burial (?) found by Baker was obviously intrusive.]
{2} The earthwork in question is part of the inturned entrance of the fort. The finds were not located.
