Summary

Medieval farm and tile production site excavated at Lyveden deserted medieval settlement in 1972-73 (Site J). The farm was occupied during the 14th century until the mid 15th century, and established within the eastern toft following the decline of the pottery kiln (112/2/1). It comprised a longhouse, a paved yard and barn. Both of the buildings were stone built and rectangular in plan. The longhouse measured 65 feet by 19 feet and had a byre at its northern end. The barn was situated to the east and measured 35 feet by 16 feet. By the late 15th century the eastern and western crofts (see 112/2/1) became one property and was used as a tileyard until about 1500. The kiln was aligned east-west with the stoke pit to the east. It was rectangular in plan and had two parallel flues and constructed within a pit measuring 24 feet by 12 feet. The walls were built of limestone faced with tile. The oven floor was raised and comprised five pairs of arches which were constructed of tile. The kiln also produced limited amounts of pottery.
