Building record 1623/0/19 - K6 telephone box, Church Street
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
This K6 telephone box is one of nine in the Daventry district of Northamptonshire, and is itself located in a conservation area. The K6 telephone box or kiosk was designed in 1935 to commemorate the silver jubilee of King George V. This particular example was not listed on the grounds that it did not have a strong visual relationship with the surrounding architecture. The other 8 K6s that were assessed were listed Grade II.

Full Description
{1} The K6 telephone box as a building type is nationally important for its architectural and historical significance.
Due to the large number of K6 telephone kiosks that have survived, selection is determined on the basis of
their group value with other listed buildings. To be listable a kiosk needs to have a strong visual relationship
with more than one listed building. However, if the setting was of exceptional interest in its own right; or the
kiosk was in proximity to a single Grade I listed building; or the single Grade II listed building it is nearby has
a particular contextual relationship to the kiosk, such as a rural post office, then it would still meet the criteria for listing (Street Furniture Selection Guide, English Heritage, April 2011). The kiosk in Brixworth is not
situated in close proximity to any listed buildings. Whilst the corner of the Grade II listed Home Farm (set
back from Church Street behind another dwelling) can just be seen, and the spire of the Grade I listed All
Saints Church is visible in the distance, neither of these listed buildings can be said to have a strong visual
relationship with the kiosk. Moreover, the kiosk cannot be seen from the church which is set back from
Church Street (1).
8 K6 telephone kiosks assesed as part of this survey were listed Grade II [NHLE Nos: 1402129; 1403305; 1403375; 1403379; 1403387; 1403388; 1403287 and 1403389]
