Monument record MNN173128 - Subrectangular ditched enclosure, linear ditches and banks, Earl’s Wood

A subrectangular ditched enclosure, linear ditches and banks of uncertain date and function are visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of Historic England’s North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project.

{1-2} A subrectangular ditched enclosure, linears ditches and banks of uncertain date and function are visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of Historic England’s North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project. Located within Earl’s Wood/Buttockspire Wood and centred at SP 64894 41035, a subrectangular ditch up to 9 metres wide encloses an internal area about 66 metres NW-SE and 72 metres SW-NE at its widest points. The NW corner of the enclosure is not visible as it is truncated by a modern forest road/trackway. From the SE corner a fragmented linear ditch up to 4.5 metres wide extends ESE for 345 metres, with shorts section of bank partly flanking its NNE facing side. To the S of this ditch, a linear ditch up to 3.5 metres wide diverges SE for 180 metres. Extrapolating its course, it would meet the longer ditch to the N very close to the SE corner of the subrectangular enclosure, suggesting an association with the other features. Also visible on the SE facing side of the ditched enclosure, a linear ditch doglegs 34 metres S and then 72 metres SE, linking to a boundary line recorded on the 1st Edition OS map.
