Full Description
{1} A D-shaped enclosure of uncertain date and function is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of Historic England’s North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project. Located within Buttockspire Wood and centred at SP 65844 41419, a boundary ditch up to 7.6 metres wide has a linear end facing W and a curvilinear ditch facing SE, and encloses an internal area about 37 metres NW-SE and 31.5 metres SW-NE. The 1814 Ordnance Surveyors drawing shows that this area located within woodland that formed part of the former Whittlewood medieval hunting forest and it is possible that the earthworks date anywhere from the Iron Age to the medieval periods.
