Full Description

{1-4} A cluster of twenty charcoal burning platforms of probable medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and was mapped as part of Historic England’s North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project. Located in fields west of Linshire Farm and centred at SP 69539 42056, the very dark macula cropmarks are variously sized between 4 and 22.5 metres in diameter and extend over an area of 450 metres W-E and 245 metres N-S. Although mapped in open fields, the 1814 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing shows that the features would have been located within woodland that formed part of the medieval hunting forest of Whittlewood. This area was subsequently felled and cleared for agricultural fields by the publication of the 1st edition OS maps in the mid-1880s.
