Full Description

{1} Recorded in 1970 prior to demolition. Built in stone with a thatched roof, one and a half storeys. Possibly three phases of construction. The west end is relatively unaltered; the beam is plain and the small north window which may have lit a pantry has a chamfered lintel. On the exterior, at the east end, is a straight joint up the gable wall to the south of the chimney. On the chimney side there is good quoining, and the masonry suggests a rebuilding and strengthening of the chimney. On the south side of the straight joint is a blocked door with a chamfered lintel set into the quoining, so that, despite the straight joint, it appears that a gable entry was made when the new chomney was built. That the wall in this south-east corner is not original is suggested by the fact that it is only 1'6 compared to the 2' or more elsewhere. Inside, the east room has an E-W beam with plain stops carried on a brick pier at the east end and brick wall at the west end. The fireplace has a bressumer with diamond stops which might be of c1700. It may be that the E-W beam, perhaps of the early C17, was carried on a timber post at the east end and this was part of the timber heck of a firehood. In c1700 the firehood was replaced by the present chimney and the entry, perhaps previously against the heck, was made in the gable end.
In the 19th century there was much alteration and the present entrance and layout were made. Probably the mullioned bay window which is awkwardly joined to the eall on the exterior was also added at this time.
