Full Description
{1} Recorded in 1959 prior to demolition; partially derelict and in a poor state. Two storey house with attics wholly in roof, constructed of coursed stone rubble with thatched roof. A moulded stone label over one of the front windows suggests a 17th century date for this building, although the back windows have wood lintels of the beginning of the 18th century. It may be that both are original and the cottage should be dated to c1700. Original doorway is at the SE end; a more modern doorway has been inserted between the windows. The NW end of the house is gabled with sloped kneelers and parapet surmounted by a C19 brick chimney. The SE end of the house is masked by a later cottage (No 3). Inside, in the main SE room, the exposed chamfered ceiling has a shaped stop at the SE end only. The ceiling joists are exposed and stop chamfered, showing clear adze marks in the chamfers. The roof truss has a tie beam and collar tenoned between the principle and two purlins each side cleated to the outer faces of the principals. Some of the wind braces remain, very rough in shape. The rafters (where not removed) are small and rough and not straight.
