Building record 2339/0/2 - Sands Farmhouse

A late 18th/early 19th century farmhouse.

{1} A building recording survey was undertaken prior to the demolition and replacement of the farmhouse. The late 18th century, or early 19th century farmhouse is a two-storey, two-pile building with a stone north-eastern frontage and bare and rendered brick sides and front. The adjacent shelter shed has a similar construction with a stone north-eastern wall with brick sides. The thickness of the wall between the northern and southern pile suggests a stone wall in alignment with the north-eastern stone wall of the adjacent shelter shed giving the farm a stone-faced aspect viewed from the village. The farmhouse was renovated during the second half of the 20th century when the outside brick work was rendered, old roof trusses replaced, and all chimney stacks removed apart from the western one of the northern pile. The inside of the farmhouse retains few original features. The adjacent shelter shed is six bays long and was initially open fronted on the southern side. During the second half of the 20th century, the arches were infilled in modern brick and two arches have modern doors. The shelter shed was then used to store and maintain farm equipment with bay 1 to 5 forming an open space inside. The westernmost sixth bay is a closed space with sliding doors, used to store flammable goods
