Full Description
{1} Owners from 1900 and until closure in 1920 Stanton Ironworks Co.Ltd., As with the Loddington quarries to the south there were considerable reserves of ironstone but the area was even more remote from the railway system. It would have been hard to connect to the Midland main line so a connection was made with LNWR Northampton to Market Harborough at Draughton crossing. Output was commenced in 1902 and there were pits on each side of the River Slade valley between the stream and Orton Lodge. After the end of the first World War demand for ore dropped generally and the pits were generally becoming worked out. A new area was leased after trial holes found the existence of orebeds of more consistent good quality and thickness but were not worked because of the lengthy haulage and heavy engineering involved. The extension to the tramway was refused because of the number of level crossings and Loddington Quarries refused to allow their tramway to be used. In view of this the quarries were closed down in 1920.
