Full Description

{1} Owners from 1897 Stanton Ironworks Co.Ltd., from 1950 Stewarts & Lloyds Minerals Ltd until closure in late 1966. Rothwell & Desborough are seperated by the valley of the River Ise and when Stantons Desborough pits were becoming exhausted the company obtained leases in 1897 for the corresponding deposits on the opposite side of the valley. Quarrying occurred to both sides of the A6 Rothwell to Desborough road. The western side and much larger was known as Rothwell West or Long Pit. This stretched for about a mile to just below Hospital Farm. The eastern pit known as Rothwell East or Little Pit was about half the size. Operations were brought to an abrupt halt by the General Strike in 1926 and for Rothwell Hill it proved to be the end although there were good stocks available. In 1959 the reserves were not forgotten and in 1959 quarrying was again restarted. The first being sent away in December 1959. However this did not last long as there was a slackening in demand and at the end of 1966 the quarries were closed.
