Full Description
{1-7} A Second World War Royal Air Force camp is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of Historic England’s North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project. Located in fields between Henhood Farm and Litchlake Farm and centred at SP 66599 42387, the Administrative Site was one of 10 satellite RAF camps for military personnel serving at adjacent RAF Silverstone, an operational wartime military airfield. Aerial photographs taken in spring 1942 show the airfield under construction at that time and the camp had yet to be created. By 1943 the airfield was operational. The Admin Site comprised a sentry box that guarded an access road leading to the Station Headquarters offices linked to the operations block building. Nearby this is a crew briefing room and two toilets, along with 2 open-topped brick and earth-bermed blast shelters. Aerial photographs taken in 1963 show that the camp’s buildings remain entirely intact. By 1973, however, the camp buildings remain upstanding, but the blast shelter appear in the process of being demolished. By 1991, all of the camp buildings and structures have been demolished and new buildings constructed on the site. On aerial photographs taken in 2019, no evidence of the former RAF camp can be seen.
